Since 1993, the Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA) has sponsored the annual Don Ritenour Charity Golf Classic, formerly known as the VHDA Charity Invitational Golf Tournament. The proceeds of this event are awarded to select homeless shelters and service providers in Virginia. Through this effort, VHDA has donated approximately $2 million to over 85 homeless shelters and Habitat for Humanity houses.
Homelessness is a serious issue in Virginia, but we have been making significant strides toward solving the problem. In fact, Virginia’s homeless population has dropped 31 percent since 2010, according to HUD. While this is great news, there are still more than 6,200 homeless individuals, families, and veterans in Virginia who need assistance.
One way of doing that is by supporting VHDA’s charity golf tournament this year. Through a competitive process, VHDA has selected six shelters and a Habitat for Humanity project to receive this year’s golf tournament proceeds:
We sincerely appreciate the continuing support and generous participation of our affordable housing partners. Through a competitive process, VHDA has selected six shelters and a Habitat for Humanity project to receive this year’s golf tournament proceeds: ForKids, Inc. of Norfolk, Northern Virginia Family Services of Oakton, Operation Renewed Hope Foundation of Alexandria, Shelter for Help in Emergency of Charlottesville, The Haven at First Market, Inc. of Charlottesville, YWCA of Richmond, and Habitat for Humanity in the Roanoke Valley.
The tournament will be held Thursday, May 25, 2017 at Ford’s Colony in Williamsburg, Virginia. Registration and an open practice range will be available at 10:30 a.m. Lunch will be served prior to the 12:00 shotgun start. The awards ceremony and dinner will follow the end of tournament play.
